A Chinese holidaymaker has been hit with a fine for washing her feet in a public bathroom on one of Thailand’s picturesque tourist islands.
The woman was spotted washing her feet in a sink less than 30 minutes after island officials posted a ‘no foot washing’ sign in the loo.
The warnings were posted in bathrooms on the island of Phi Phi Don a few days after a group of Chinese tourists upset locals by washing their feet and sandals in hand basins.
Koh Phi Phi-Nopparathara National Park Chief Chaithat Boonphupantanti told the Phuket Gazette: ‘She didn’t pay any attention to the sign directly in front of her.
‘Our officers took photos of her breaking the law before informing her that she was committing a crime.’

‘We were not rude or aggressive when we were dealing with the tourist. We are just trying to establish rules that will keep the place clean and beautiful.’
The relationship between Chinese tourists and Thai locals has become strained following a series of high-profile incidents that have led to stern warnings from the Chinese government and an etiquette guide being published by Thailand’s tourist board.
Earlier this week, photos that showed Chinese visitors washing their feet and sandals in public sinks in Phi Phi led to outrage, with locals insisting that the holidaymakers committed a cultural faux pas.

An island official told NetEase, a Chinese media agency, that the holidaymakers’ actions were ‘inappropriate’ and that notices would be posted in public bathrooms to discourage the behaviour.
Thailand is a popular destination for about four million Chinese tourists every year, but locals have expressed frustration and outrage in response to the actions of a handful of visitors.
Last month, Thailand’s tourist board announced that it would be handing out etiquette manuals to Chinese tourists who were visiting during the Chinese New Year.

The manuals outlined how the holidaymakers are expected to behave while they visit Thailand.
They were created after the Thai government received complaints from locals, who accused Chinese visitors of defecating in public, causing traffic accidents with reckless driving, and defacing tourist attractions.
Chinese tourists were temporarily banned from even entering Wat Rong Khun, the Buddhist White Temple in Chiang Rai, after complaints that they had ruined the toilets.

  1. The impact is both good and bad. The best way to impact on the economy of Thailand. Improving financial system
But on the other side The next concern is bordered by the behavior of the Chinese people. etiquette, etc.
But one thing is the same. China, Thailand and the Thailand look very good. Thailand is like a Chinese person. Like Friends Innocuous Thailand's nice to have a kind and is a civilized country. Compared to Europe in the eyes of the Chinese people.
In my opinion, I think the behavior of the Chinese people did not result in much. But the major attractions of the Chinese economy makes us better.

  3. I do not think these measures will affect tourist numbers, the measures are fair and backed by both the Chinese and Thai authorities.
Most tourists are aware that other countries and cultures have different rules, regulations, and laws that have to be adhered to when we are visitors or guests in that country.
The article says that four million Chinese tourists visit Thailand every year, and that it is only a handful of visitors who do not respect the laws. If this handful of visitors is not happy with the new Thai rules and regulations, then they are welcome to visit other destinations. Thailand is a beautiful country and we need to keep it that way in order to attract the other twenty million or so visitors who come here every year.

  6. I think the rules do not affect the evacuation travel and to visit the country. Chinese people also traveling in the same country also needs to be taken at the Chinese tour groups to generate income for the country. Each partner must understand each other. We have to clarify the regulations and manuals, it is good for us to Arun Thai culture and etiquette of Thailand to have a beautiful place to tour.

  13. I don’t think the measures would affect the tourist number. For one thing, there are measures, but no solid punishments like banning. Getting fined could hardly change anything. They surely can afford it or they’ll just get away with what they do without getting caught. Plus, Thailand is one of the best destination in Southeast Asia for its beauty and the price. Tourists will still come despite the measures.

  15. I think the issue etiquette guide for Chinese travelers is not likely to contribute to something better. Because very few people who are interested in opening it read. And if we do not allow Chinese tourists to travel in our country. It may be that our country lost revenue. The best way is to issue strict regulations to control the behavior of tourists is better.

  19. Thailand is the top choice of Chinese tourists to travel. I do not think that Chinese tourists will decline from this measure. From all the events that occur, it might be because of the familiar in their culture and habits make them familiar with the behavior and applied to tourist destinations, not to traditions and morals of a particular destination, such measures will cause travelers to the Chinese respect for cultural traditions and morals of more destinations. Because they will learn and understand from the cultural Etiquette Guide book.
