สิ่งที่ควรพิจารณาให้รอบคอบเกี่ยวกับการท่องเที่ยวตลาดเกย์ และเลสเบี้ยน
ตลาดการท่องเที่ยวเกย์และเลสเบี้ยนนั้นมักถูกมองว่าเป็นตลาดที่ไม่เหมาะสม หรือเป็นมิตรกับจุดหมายปลายทางนัก โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งตลาดเอเชีย และแอฟริกา ที่เข้าใจว่าตลาดเกย์และเลยเบี้ยนคือการท่องเที่ยวเพื่อการหาความสำราญทางเพศ (Sex Tourism) ความเข้าใจเช่นว่านี้เป็นความเข้าใจที่ผิดโดยสิ้นเชิง ทั้งนี้นักท่องเที่ยวกลุ่มเกย์ เลสเบี้ยน กลุ่มสองเพศ และกลุ่มข้ามเพศ (Gay Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender- GLBT) นั้นมีรสนิยมการท่องเที่ยวที่มีความละเมียดละมุน มีความต้องการเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับวัฒนธรรมท้องถิ่นสูง และมีแนวโน้มการใช้จ่ายมาก
ในงานแสดงสินค้าด้านการท่องเที่ยว ITB ที่กรุงเบอร์ลินนั้นได้ให้ความสำคัญกับนักท่องเที่ยวกลุ่ม GLBT อย่างยิ่ง โดยจัดพื้นที่แสดงสิ้นค้าสำหรับบริษัทนำเที่ยวที่เน้นตลาดนี้ โดยมีบริษัท และสำนักงานจัดการจุดหมายปลายทางแห่งชาติต่างๆให้ความสำคัญกับตลาดดังกล่าว และร่วมสัมมนาเกี่ยวกับตลาดนี้จำนวนมาก บริษัทนำเที่ยวทั่วไปนั้นก็ยังให้ความสำคัญกับตลาดดังกล่าว และสร้างแผนกที่บริการนักท่องเที่ยวกลุ่มนี้โดยเฉพาะ
ยังไม่มีข้อมูลเชิงตัวเลขที่แน่ชัดเกี่ยวกับผลประโยชน์ทางเศรษฐกิจของตลาดนักท่องเที่ยวกลุ่ม GLBT โดยบริษัทวิจัยบางบริษัทนั้นมีข้อมูลว่ามีมูลค่าถึง 160 พันล้านเหรียญต่อปี และเดินทางบ่อยกว่านักท่องเที่ยวทั่วไปเฉลี่ย 1.5 เท่า คือประมาณ 6 ครั้งต่อปี ด้านการใช้จ่ายต่อการเดินทางนั้น พบว่านักท่องเที่ยวกลุ่มนี้ใช้จ่ายต่อการเดินทางเฉลี่ย 2,000 เหรียญต่อปี และ ใช้จ่ายในจุดหมายปลายทางเป็นจำนวนมาก นอกจากนั้นในช่วงการชะลอตัวทางเศรษฐกิจนั้นยังพบด้วยว่านักท่องเที่ยวกลุ่มนี้ยังทนทานต่อการหดตัว และการชะลอตัวทางเศรษฐกิจด้วย เมืองฟิลาเดเฟีย ในสหรัฐฯ ลงทุนด้านการตลาดจุดหมายปลายทางดึงดูดนักท่องเที่ยวกลุ่มนี้อย่างจริงจังและพบว่าผลตอบแทนการลงทุนด้านการตาดมีมากถึง 153:1 $ โดยใช้จ่ายกับกิจกรรมนันทนาการและที่พักมากที่สุด
นอกจากนั้นยังพบว่านักท่องเที่ยวกลุ่ม GLBT นี้ ยังนิยมกิจกรรมทางวัฒนธรรมที่จัดขึ้นโดยชุมชนท้องถิ่นมากกว่ากิจกรรมที่จัดขึ้นเฉพาะสำหรับเกย์ และเลสเบี้ยน สำหรับจุดหมายปลายทาง และกิจกรรมที่เป็นที่นิยมสำหรับนักท่องเที่ยวกลุ่มนี้ปรากฏในแผนภูมิด้านล่างนี้
